Ken Loach’s new film I, Daniel Blake solemnly opens 22nd Auteur Film Festival at the Belgrade Youth Center on 25th November.
22nd Auteur Film Festival (FAF) will be held in Belgrade from 25th November until 3rd December, and the audience can expect a very comprehensive program. Over 80 films will be screened for ten days in ten halls.
The festival will begin with the screening of I, Daniel Blake, by the famous director Ken Loach, the winner of the “Palme d’Or” at the Cannes Film Festival this year. This socially engaged film is about a struggle of a simple man with a system, i.e. Daniel Blak’s efforts to obtain compensation in Britain after a heart attack.
Daniel Blake has worked as a carpenter in Newcastle for most of his life. Now, for the first time, he needs help from the state. He comes across Katie, a single mother of two children, Daisy and Dylan. Kate’s only chance to escape the hostel room in London is to accept a place in town she does not know, which is 500 km away. Daniel and Katie are in no man’s land, entangled in barbed wire of modern Britain’s bureacruacy.
Ken Loach (1936) is an English film and television director. He is known for his naturalistic style and socially engaged works, as well as the socialist ideals of life. Film I, Daniel Blake won the second Palme d’Or (after the film The Wind That Shakes the Barley, awarded in 2006) at the Cannes Film Festival 2016. Loach is one of the pioneers of the genre of docudrama, created by combining Italian neorealism and French New Wave. Also known as a political activist and left-wing supporter, he directed films that won numerous nominations and awards at prestigious international festivals. In addition to Cannes Festival, he also won prizes at Berlin and Venice Film Festivals, and he was awarded the British BAFTA award.
The main program of this year’s festival consists of twenty one films, of which eleven are competing for Aleksandar Sasa Petrovic, the Grand Prix of the festival. In addition to the main program, the festival is richer with an even greater number of additional programs this year.
Various programs, made up of the winners of international film festivals, new works of directors who are audience’s favourites, as well as films that show new trends in the auteur film, will have been shown by 3rd December.
